Race 1: Third Flatiron Results

Phil Gruber, Stefan Griebel and Ico are the 2nd through 4th to top out.

Photos are here.

I haven’t got all the results yet, but I wanted to send out a quick summary. There will be a full report with photos and even video before our next race, which is next Wednesday (not Thursday), at 5:30 p.m. at Chautauqua Park. The race starts promptly at 5:30 p.m. so you need to be there by 5:15 at the latest. Next week we are doing the FIRST FLATIRON. There WILL be a fixed rope for this event. In fact, due to the popularity of the Third yesterday (I counted 25 racers and 3-4 photographers and some spectators), I am planning on having four (4) fixed lines for the rappel. This is a new thing for the First Flatiron, as I have never fixed a rope on this course before. Some purists (Hi Buzz and Bill) will scoff at this idea and racers are not required to use the lines, though I think it is a safer alternative than speed downclimbing the steep, but easy south west face (5.2).

So, on to the preliminary results. Dave Mackey took his second straight 3rd Flatiron title, despite having some route finding trouble on the face itself, which probably accounted for a slower time this year. Ico (visiting climber who finished very high two years ago) took second place with Phil Gruber (speed record holder on the Naked Edge at less than an hour) was third. First to the summit of the rock was Dave, with Phil in second and Stefan Griebel one second behind. Ico and Dave Stewart (5th to the summit) smoked on the descent and moved up. Everyone send me your results and splits please. Many racers don’t have my email address but have the email of someone on this list. Get the results to me please. Everyone had a great time; no one got injured. What an excellent event! Thanks for coming out. Also, big thanks to our riggers, Tony Bubb and Dan Mottinger, and photographers, Rick Casey, Chris Archer, Homie Prater, and Hans Florine (also a racer). Stefan Griebel won the King of the Mountains for this course with a blistering time of 7:32 for the face itself. Congratulations to everyone.
