Rocky Mountain Rescue
August 17, 1999
Dear Rocky Mountain Rescue,
I want to express my deepest thanks and gratitude for rescuing me from beneath Green Mountain Pinnacle on Sunday, August 8th, 1999. I was severely injured and needed help. Your members, along with rangers, paramedics, ambulance attendants, and even some nearby climbers, responded with astounding swiftness. These people were extremely well trained and did an expert job of extracting me from very difficult terrain over 3 miles from a roadway. But most of all, these people were so compassionate, so giving, that I felt honored to be helped by them.
This climbing accident was, like most climbing accidents, the result of human failure. My failure. I made a very bad mistake that my years of climbing shouldn't have allowed me to make. Nevertheless, I did it. And I was in very bad need of other people to come save me. I didn't like being in that situation. I didn't like being dependent upon others to clean up my mess. Yet, the most overwhelming feeling that I get out of this unfortunate situation is my renewed belief in depth of character of the people in Rocky Mountain Rescue.
I would very much like to send each person involved in this rescue a personal letter. If you could help me in obtaining these names and addresses, I would forever be in your debt.
I feel any donation that I could possibly enclose would be an insult to the value I received from your group. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to make some pitiful gesture my deepest gratitude. I realize your members are volunteers. What special people these must be. Volunteering their free time, their money, and their sweat to help others they don't even know. I can imagine this type of work to be extremely rewarding. I know my check cannot come close to such rewards, but I want to contribute to your organization. Use this money however you see fit. Whether for new equipment or maybe just a pizza and beer party from me to all of you.
While my time is limited, as everyone else's, I would like help out with some volunteer work when I am healthy. Please advise me in how I can be assistance to your group.
With deepest and unending gratitude,
Bill Wright
